The Federal Government has announced plans to construct bamboo houses nationwide for low and medium income earners.
This was made known on Wednesday during a Capacity Building Workshop on the Relevance of Bamboo for Climate-Smart Housing Construction held in Abuja.
Esuabana Asanye, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, shared the groundbreaking proposal. Represented by Benadette Oguche, Director of Environmental Science Technology (EST), Asanye highlighted that bamboo construction would promote environmental sustainability while aligning with principles of affordability, comfort, and adaptability for Nigerians across various income brackets.
“Bamboo, a versatile plant, has a long history of use in building materials, paper production, and traditional medicine, making it a sustainable resource for this initiative,” Asanye noted.
The government also praised the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) for its efforts in researching and developing sustainable solutions to combat climate change challenges in the country.
