The Federal Government has officially started the construction of the Wurukum Flyover Bridge, a major infrastructure project valued at $950 million, along the Lafia–Makurdi–Otukpo–Enugu dual carriageway.
The project, situated at a critical intersection of the 500-kilometre highway, is expected to significantly ease vehicular congestion and enhance the movement of agricultural produce from Benue State to other parts of the federation.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, explained that the bridge is scheduled for completion before the next general elections.
He commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for facilitating the project through the prompt compensation of affected property owners and for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to advancing infrastructure development in the state.
Governor Alia, visibly delighted by the initiative, expressed optimism that the contractors, Habour Engineering Construction Company, would deliver the project within the agreed timeline.
He emphasized that the flyover would not only ease transport challenges but also stimulate economic activities in Benue and neighbouring states.
The Managing Director of the construction company reassured both the federal government and the people of Benue that work would be executed diligently and in line with international standards and specifications.
Following the ceremony, Minister Umahi announced that he would proceed to inspect ongoing works on the Otukpo–Enugu road as part of his nationwide infrastructure assessment tour.
