FG Changes Admission Rules, Removes Maths for Some Arts Students

The Federal Government has changed the rules for getting into universities, polytechnics, and colleges across Nigeria to make it easier for more students to gain admission.

This was announced on Tuesday in a statement by Boriowo Folasade, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to the statement, the new policy was introduced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, which he said is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda to make education fair and open to everyone.

With the new rule, students applying for some arts and humanities courses will no longer need to have credit in mathematics. The government said this change will help many qualified students who were unable to gain admission in the past because of strict and outdated requirements.

Dr. Alausa explained that every year, over two million candidates write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), but only about 700,000 get admitted. He said the new policy will help close this gap and allow schools to admit an extra 250,000 to 300,000 students each year.

He added that the reform is aimed at giving more young Nigerians the chance to further their education and build a better future.
