A powerful tsunami has strucked Russia’s Far East on Wednesday after a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake shook the Pacific Ocean near the Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering widespread evacuations and tsunami warnings across multiple countries.
The tsunami hit the northern Kuril Islands, impacting the coastal town of Severo-Kurilsk. More than 2,500 residents were evacuated to higher ground as emergency services activated high-alert protocols.
Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko confirmed that the first wave reached the shoreline shortly after the earthquake. “Residents remain safe on high ground until the tsunami threat is completely lifted,” Limarenko stated, noting that emergency workers are actively monitoring the situation to ensure public safety.
While there were no immediate reports of deaths or major structural damage, drone footage revealed flooding across Severo-Kurilsk. Streets were swamped, buildings damaged, and the Alaid fish processing plant was submerged. All staff at the facility were safely evacuated, and several people sustained minor injuries.
The undersea earthquake, among the strongest ever recorded, generated tsunami waves of up to four meters high, triggering alerts across the Pacific. Tsunami warnings were issued for Russia, Japan, the United States, and several other countries.
In Japan, waves as high as 1.3 meters struck the eastern coast. Authorities urged more than 1.9 million residents across 21 prefectures to evacuate as a precaution.
In Hawaii, waves reached up to four feet in some coastal areas. Governor Josh Green warned residents to avoid the shores, citing the risk of flooding and property damage.
The U.S. West Coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington, is also under tsunami alert, with waves expected to reach those areas within hours.
