It’s the height of naïveté to believe that a bunch of young men and kids would wake up one day and rush to a tailor’s shop to have Russian flags sewn for them to fly in solidarity with the East. Russia is not even the palpable counterbalance to the West in Africa—China is. Russia is popular today only because of its alleged affiliation with power disruptions in our neighbouring countries, and that’s enough to alarm anyone.
Not even at the peak of the Cold War were kids who couldn’t even recite the words that made up the USSR seen romanticizing the Eastern bloc as we’ve witnessed these past few days, especially for a country that has not been in the news for any largesse to the country. It would be more logical if China, which has been our “benevolent” development partner, were the one being so romanticized and invited to interfere in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
Even a novice in the foreign policy sphere would tell that this goes beyond our internal crisis as a nation. For a region that has suffered political instability in three major countries and endured insurgency for too long, we must learn to pause and reflect on where to draw the line. Nobody who’s hungry would use their money to buy fabric and make the flag of another country—they would use it to eat. We should agitate for a favorable economic climate, which benefits everyone, including public officials themselves, without allowing ourselves to become unwitting tools of an agenda we don’t understand.
You can antagonize your government as fiercely as you want, and it would be your constitutional right to do so. But rising up to challenge the sovereign integrity of your country is not the activism you think it is. That’s the line you don’t want to cross. You may need a constitutional lawyer to explain that to you. I pray you learn to see the line before it’s too late.
