Empty Gas Tanker Blocks Ibeju Bridge, Causes Heavy Traffic on Epe Expressway

A major traffic jam has been reported along the Epe Expressway after an empty gas tanker fell and blocked the entire stretch of the Ibeju Bridge on Thursday morning.

According to reports, no life was lost in the incident. However, the accident caused a total blockage of the road, leaving motorists stranded for hours.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTM, have since arrived at the scene to manage traffic and guide motorists through alternative routes.

In a statement released on Thursday, LASTMA announced traffic diversions for road users approaching from both sides of the expressway.

“For motorists inbound from Inner Epe, Marina, Begger, and Oko Orisan heading to the Island, please divert via:

T-Junction → Oke-Osho → Tokin → Agbowa → Imota,
and reconnect through Ikorodu Road to proceed to the Mainland,” the statement read.

“For motorists from Lekki, Ajah, Victoria Island, and Law School heading towards Epe, please divert via:

Ikorodu Road → Ikorodu → Tokin,
and continue your journey from there.”

LASTMA also said that its officials, in collaboration with emergency response agencies, were working to remove the tanker and reopen the bridge for normal traffic flow.

“The agency is currently waiting for a crane machine to arrive for recovery operations,” the statement added. “The vehicle owner has assured that the crane is on the way.”

Drivers were also advised to remain calm and cooperate with traffic officers on site.

“Motorists are urged to be patient, exercise caution, and obey traffic instructions while recovery efforts continue,” LASTMA said.

The agency promised to provide further updates once the tanker is evacuated and normal movement resumes on the bridge.
