Speaking at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, Yakubu, the INEC Chairman has made it known that INEC has completed a comprehensive review of the 2023 general elections in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, identifying 142 recommendations, eight of which require amendments to the Electoral Act or the Constitution.
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has assured Nigerians that significant electoral reforms will be implemented ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, Yakubu, the INEC Chairman has made it known that INEC has completed a comprehensive review of the 2023 general elections in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, identifying 142 recommendations, eight of which require amendments to the Electoral Act or the Constitution.
Yakubu, who was at the State House for the inauguration of two new INEC National Commissioners from the North-West and South-East, confirmed that the commission now has its full complement of commissioners as mandated by law. He also dismissed rumors of his removal, affirming his position as the Chief Electoral Officer of Nigeria.
Addressing the reform process, Yakubu noted that INEC is working closely with the National Assembly, which will hold a public hearing to finalize a new electoral bill for presidential assent. “We reviewed the 2023 general elections and engaged stakeholders, resulting in 142 recommendations. Eight require constitutional or Electoral Act amendments, which we have discussed with the National Assembly,” he said, adding that further details would come from the legislature.
The INEC chairman emphasized that the proposed amendments aim to strengthen the electoral process, ensuring a more robust framework for the 2027 elections.
