From Sunday, June 8, 2025, Nigerians will begin paying more to obtain or renew driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates, following a newly approved fee structure from the Joint Tax Board (JTB).
The JTB, in a statement issued in May 2025, explained that the nationwide price hike is driven by the integration of upgraded security features and a general increase in production costs. All licensing offices across the country have been instructed to implement the revised rates immediately.
Under the new structure, a standard driver’s license for motor vehicles will now cost ₦15,000 for a three-year validity period and ₦21,000 for five years. Tricycle drivers (keke operators) will pay ₦7,000 and ₦11,000 for the same respective durations.
Vehicle number plates have also seen significant changes. Standard number plates for private and commercial vehicles are now priced at ₦30,000. Fancy plates for vehicles have surged to ₦400,000. For motorcycles, standard plates will now cost ₦12,000, while the fancy versions will be available at ₦50,000.
This is not the first time such a revision is being implemented. In 2021, the JTB enacted a similar fee increase, also pointing to enhanced security measures and increased production expenses.
