An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court has sentenced a 44-year-old man, Oto Edet, to life imprisonment for the defilement of his neighbour’s nine-year-old daughter.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Abiola Soladoye described Edet as a “pathological liar” and “a disgraceful neighbour” who committed a vile and inexcusable act. The judge condemned the convict’s “unwholesome conduct,” stating that his actions demonstrated a complete lack of decency and humanity.
“The prosecution has successfully established the case of defilement against the defendant through credible and compelling evidence. He is hereby convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment,” Justice Soladoye ruled.
She also ordered that Edet’s name be entered into the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register to serve as a deterrent to others.
The court used the occasion to call on parents and guardians to be more vigilant and protective of their children, particularly in neighbourhood settings where trust can be easily abused. Justice Soladoye further urged stakeholders in the justice system to continue advocating for zero tolerance toward all forms of sexual violence.
