Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant, SSA, on Media to former President Goodluck Jonathan, was given a two-year prison sentence on Monday by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Director General of the Labour Party, LP’s Presidential Campaign Council, Okupe, was found guilty by the court of violating the Money Laundering Act in a decision written by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu.

The defendant was exonerated and cleared of counts 1 through 33 of the charge that bordered on corruption, despite being found guilty on counts 34 to 59 of the charge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, brought against him.

The defendant was sentenced to two years in prison on each of the 26 counts of the charge; however, the court decided that his sentences would run concurrently.

Alternately, Okupe could pay a fine of N500, 000 for each of the counts on which he was found guilty, according to trial Justice Ojukwu.

The court emphasized that although if the defendant’s sentencing included the possibility of a payment, it would not order that he be detained in prison custody and that the fine must be paid by Monday at 4 p.m.
