A Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, on July 15, sentenced a graduate of the Ekiti State University, Ade-Ajayi Oluwatobi, 19, and a worker of the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Olubola Olusola Sunday, 29, to various jail terms having found them guilty of offenses bordering on cybercrime.
In the charge sheet, Sunday was accused of sending electronic messages misrepresenting himself as being Mic Porter, a white male with the email micporter35@gmail.com, and duping one Mega Johnson to the tune of $1,000 through Western Union money transfer.
Oluwatobi on the other hand was accused of impersonating one Stacy Erisman with the intent to defraud one Umar Farouk who had chatted him via his email: stacyerisman9@gmail.com, thereby committing an offense contrary to Section 22(2) of the Cybercrimes ((Prohibition Prevention) Act, 2015, and punishable under Section 22(2) (b) (iv) of the same Act.
Delivering his ruling, Justice Muhammed Sanni sentenced Oluwatobi to a one-year jail term with an option of a fine of N500,000 while Sunday was prosecuted on a three-count charge and sentenced to six months imprisonment on each of the charges to run concurrently. He, however, gave an option of a fine of N100, 000 on each count.
