The Benue State Government has declared Wednesday, June 18, 2025, a public holiday in anticipation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled visit to the state.
According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Serumun Deborah Aber, the President will embark on a one-day condolence visit to sympathize with the government and people of Benue over the persistent wave of violent attacks that have claimed numerous lives across various communities.
The government said the public holiday is to enable residents to turn out en masse and welcome the President. However, the directive excludes essential service workers, including healthcare professionals, security agencies, and staff of financial institutions, who are expected to remain at their posts.
While encouraging citizens to receive the President warmly, the government’s announcement has stirred mixed reactions, especially in light of mounting frustrations over the state’s continued security challenges and lack of urgent federal intervention.
President Tinubu’s visit comes amidst rising calls for justice, protection, and tangible support for the victims and displaced communities affected by the unrelenting violence.
