Former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has vowed to forge an alliance with Northern political leaders ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. Dokubo, feeling betrayed by President Bola Tinubu after supporting him in the 2023 election, accused Tinubu of reneging on his promises to the Niger Delta people.

In a video circulating widely on social media, Asari Dokubo was captured condemning President Bola Tinubu and the Yoruba community.

He alleges betrayal by Tinubu and questions past alliances with the Yoruba, expressing regret for not understanding the reasoning behind historical partnerships with the North.

In the video, Dokubo expressed regret for once doubting past decisions by former Ijaw leaders, including ex-Governor Melford Okilo, to align with the North.

Addressing the Ijaw people, he pledged to form a renewed alliance with the northern region, stating, “I apologize to our fathers, Melford Okilo and Prieye. They were not wrong to align with the North. From now on, we’ll strengthen ties with the North.”

In a passionate outcry, Dokubo lamented that the Ijaw community’s support has been disregarded by the Yoruba, labelling them “betrayers.”

“We risked our lives, voted, and did everything, and this is what we get?” he questioned, adding, “The Yoruba people do not value the Ijaw contribution. They betray us!”

Dokubo’s grievances follow President Tinubu’s recent decision to dismantle the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, a move seen by some as sidelining the region.

The President’s decision was confirmed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, who announced the scrapping of both the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development.

As Dokubo rallies for a lasting alliance with the North, his statements are already stirring intense debate, potentially reshaping the political dynamics between the Niger Delta and the Yoruba communities.
