Multiple award-winning investigative journalist and editor at the Centre for Collaborative Investigative Journalism (CCIJ), Mr. Amzat Ajibola, has urged young media practitioners to embrace impactful journalism that protects the rights of Nigerians.
Speaking as a guest speaker during a Career Development with Augustina Armstrong, CDWAA, Cohort 3, 2025 session, Mr. Ajibola encouraged upcoming journalists to focus on truth and integrity rather than seeking financial favors from politicians.
“As journalists, you have the right and the duty to bring the truth out of government,” he said, emphasizing that the Nigerian Constitution supports press freedom and the journalist’s responsibility to hold power accountable.
He advised young broadcasters to look out for professional opportunities such as fellowships, trainings, and freelance gigs, noting that there are several platforms available for those willing to work hard. “Don’t believe people who say there are no opportunities, it depends on how you search for them,” he added, citing his own success as a winner of the West African Media Awards as an example.
Mr. Ajibola also highlighted the importance of continuous learning, training, and verification in journalism. Referring to a popular Journalism 101 phrase, he said, “Even when your mother says she loves you, verify it.”
He further encouraged journalists to form professional groups, collaborate, and empower one another, stressing that teamwork and shared growth are key to sustaining strong journalism.
Mr. Ajibola concluded by expressing optimism about the future of the profession, saying, “The future is bright for those who are ready to improve and who understand that we have a country to build.”
