After visiting bandit enclave, Sheikh Gumi says Nigerian Military doesn’t want insecurity to end

A Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has alleged that the Nigerian Military does not want insecurity to end in the Northern part of the country because they are benefitting from the situation.

Mr Gumi made the allegation during an interview on Arise TV, a few days after rounding up what could be termed his consultative mission with bandits terrorising the North.
He had crisscrossed banditry-ravaged states of Zamfara and Katsina, including his home state, Kaduna.
According to him, his meeting with the bandits had availed him the opportunity to know their grievances and needs which, if fulfilled by the Federal Government, banditry and kidnapping would be a thing of the past.

He regretted that non-cooperation of the military in the scheme of things was not helping matters, alleging that the armed forces were feeding fat on the country’s security challenges.
Mr Gumi said: “We are soliciting the government to listen and act fast, we want action, we want them to act fast and I promise you the next time we will sit here, if the government will agree, maybe we will be talking about how safe our forests are and there won’t be any kidnapping.

“We are pacifying these people because they have confidence now, they see that we are truthful, we don’t tell them lies and we don’t deceive (them).
“I am here to tell the military to cooperate. I have tried to meet the military commanders but they are not cooperating.
“Our problem now is the military, the Army and the Air Force, I want them to cooperate now since we have new service chiefs.”

He, however, commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu, for providing his team the security they needed all through his mission.
“I praised the police and the Inspector General of Police. I give him credit for assisting us to go and meet these people but the military are not forthcoming, they are not cooperating, I don’t know why.

“The military is not encouraging matters at all because they are the beneficiaries of this insecurity but I want them to change,” he added.
