Hello, can we meet you?

I am Ebiomofari Omowumi Janet, first-class graduate of Agriculture from the University of Ilorin. With a multifaceted background, I excel as a certified baker, content creator, blogger and social media manager. During my undergraduate studies, I leveraged these skills to support myself financially and foster entrepreneurial growth.

Can you share your academic journey from your first year to graduation?
My academic journey serves as a testament to resilience, determination, and faith’s transformative power. Initially faced with a daunting 1.3 GPA, I stood at a crossroads. Refusing to let adversity prevail, I drew strength from unwavering faith, unrelenting passion, and dedicated hard work. This resurgence propelled me to achieve a stellar 5.0 GPA in my 300-level semester, paving the way for graduating with prestigious First-Class Honors.
Through this odyssey, I gleaned invaluable lessons. Perseverance taught me to hone my resilience and unwavering determination in the face of trials. Meaningful relationships with supportive mentors, peers and family fostered growth and development. Trusting God’s plan instilled unwavering hope and confidence through divine guidance. Embracing challenges revealed my inner strength and potential through self-discovery. Strategic focus and dedication yielded outstanding results, demonstrating academic excellence.
This journey equipped me with unshakeable confidence in my abilities, unwavering faith in divine guidance, enhanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills, effective time management and prioritization, and a passionate purpose driving me to make a lasting impact. Moving forward, I carry these insights, poised to excel in my pursuits and inspire others.
What are the challenges you faced while in school and how did you overcome them?
Majorly, I faced financial problems and some health issues. My 100-level year was very rough financially; I had to depend on others to attend school. But God graciously provided helpful people on campus. Moreover, I worked as a sales representative at a Lagos building materials shop during breaks. I saved the money I earned for my upkeep in school. My boss and aunt also supported me. On campus, I engaged in various businesses, selling plantain chips, Close-Up toothpaste, peanuts and sanitary pads. Despite challenges, God consistently provided for my financial needs.
You said first semester result was 1.3 GPA, how did you feel when you saw the result?
When I saw my first-semester result, a 1.3 GPA, I felt devastated. Securing admission hadn’t been easy. I had to complete a 5-month pre-degree program. Unlike others, I didn’t gain direct entry through JAMB and Post-UTME. I had to take JAMB, pre-degree exams and Post-UTME to get admitted.
Seeing that result filled me with depression and rejection, making me feel like nothing good would ever happen in my life. I felt abandoned, as if God intentionally allowed me to fail. It stung, watching others around me excel.
You graduated with a CGPA of 4.52. How were you able to move forward after your first semester results or what motivated you to keep going despite the failure?
I triumphantly graduated with a remarkable CGPA of 4.52, a testament to perseverance and determination. My academic path was initially fraught with uncertainty, but several key factors propelled me forward.
As the firstborn and first university attendee in my family, I shouldered significant responsibility. My father, despite financial constraints, selflessly prioritized my education. His unwavering commitment instilled in me an unshakeable determination to succeed.
Losing my mother at age 10 left an indelible mark. Her absence fueled my resolve to make her proud, ensuring her memory lived on through my accomplishments.
Four primary motivations guided me: breaking the poverty cycle through education, setting an example for my brother, honoring my father’s sacrifices and forging a different path. Education became my escape route, a beacon of hope for a brighter future.Through perseverance and hard work, education transformed from aspiration to reality. My 4.52 CGPA stands as a testament to resilience, family values and determination.
This journey taught me invaluable lessons: resilience defines our responses to setbacks, family support provides unwavering motivation and education empowers, liberates and transforms. My story serves as a beacon of hope for those facing adversity, demonstrating that education illuminates the path to success.
What was your reading pattern and were there any special methods you adopted?
I don’t have a specific reading pattern, but I prioritize consistent reading over intense reading. My approach is to read after each lecture ends.
Additionally, I don’t read for long stretches; instead, I read intermittently until I’m satisfied. My goal is to read for understanding and satisfaction.
How did you stay organized and manage your time effectively?
Staying organized was relatively easy for me. I utilized the SMART acronym. I intentionally planned my day to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-conscious. This allowed me to track and evaluate my daily progress.The SMART acronym is an excellent tool for goal-setting and time management.
What inspired you to study Agricultural Science?
Initially, I applied for Food Science, but I ended up in Agricultural Science. At first, I lacked passion and purpose for the course. However, during my SIWES (Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme) in my 400 level, I discovered my true interest and passion for it. That period enlightened me to the greatness of the course and the beauty of agriculture beyond the classroom. Specifically, I found my path in oil palm plantation.
9.How has your academic journey impacted your personal growth and development?
I love this question. My academic journey served as the catalyst for my personal growth and development. Following my academic breakthrough, I discovered my unique strengths and the inherent treasures God had deposited in me. I began to recognize my capabilities and the power of my actions.
Previously, I struggled with low self-esteem due to my stuttering. I avoided speaking in public gatherings, assuming others were superior. I settled for less, silently going about my affairs.
However, my academic success and surrendering to Christ transformed my mindset. This renewal enabled me to harness my strengths, and everything good within me began to make sense.
”School na scam” is a popular slang in Nigeria. What is your take on this?
The phrase ‘School na scam’ is popular in Nigeria, but I strongly disagree. School is never a scam. Although Nigeria’s educational system has its flaws, it’s still worth investing in excellence.
School served as a catalyst for my growth. It opened doors to endless possibilities, helping me become who I am today. Through school, I established a personal relationship with God, discovered my purpose, and learned to add value to the world.
While school may not provide everything needed for success, it’s a crucial path to explore opportunities. It lays the foundation for future achievements and personal development.

Looking back, is there anything you would do differently if you had the chance?
I would have started pursuing academic excellence earlier. Achieving first-class honors was a struggle due to a weak foundation. I constantly worried about failing courses, which I could have handled effortlessly. Thankfully, God provided the strength to persevere and excel.
Additionally, I would have fully participated in personal development programs on campus. Although I participated, it wasn’t to my satisfaction. I preferred online engagement, avoiding physical interactions. However, I realized I should shine as a light that cannot be hidden under a bushel.

What do you think are the most important qualities or skills for success?
A strong desire and firm decision to succeed serve as the driving force that fuels your journey and keeps you moving forward. One essential skill that helped me overcome obstacles was resilience, which enabled me to bounce back from failing my first semester and continue striving for excellence.
Self-awareness is another vital component of success, requiring understanding of your inner workings, recognition of strengths and weaknesses, and identification of motivating factors. This understanding helps leverage strengths, address and improve weaknesses, and cultivate motivation.
Prioritizing relationships is also essential, as surrounding yourself with supportive people provides valuable connections, access to resources, encouragement, and motivation. Nurturing relationships with mentors, peers, and industry experts can open doors to new opportunities and help navigate challenges. Success is a journey, not a destination. Stay committed, adaptable, and open to growth, and you’ll be well on your way to achieving your aspirations.

13.What advice would you give to students striving for academic excellence?
Dear students striving for academic excellence,
First, work on your mindset. Academic excellence is possible for everyone. I used to believe it was only for those with access to ample resources and privileged backgrounds. However, I realized anyone can achieve excellence.
My family didn’t fit this description, but I decided to stand firm and pursue my goals. If you’re a Christian, consider doing your academic journey with God, as He’s invested in your success and provides spiritual support.
To excel, hold onto determination, diligence, and resilience. Semesters may not always go as planned, but self-evaluation and adjustment can improve outcomes. When hard work doesn’t reflect in grades:

Check what you’re not doing right
Reflect on strategies
Seek help when needed
Prioritize your mental health
Don’t give up easily. Share concerns with others and celebrate milestones, no matter how small. You are doing well. Cheers to your academic growth!”
