Falana Vows To Push For Prosecution Of Nigerian Prison Officials For Torturing Lawyer

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has condemned the treatment of his colleague jailed by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom, Ekaette Obot.

According to Falana, the jailed lawyer has been subjected to humiliation and rights abuses since his incarceration.

Inibehe Effiong was sent to jail for one month by Obot for alleged contempt.

Effiong, a human rights lawyer, who is also the National Legal Adviser of the African Action Congress (AAC), was in court to defend Leo Ekpenyong, a lawyer, in a libel suit filed by Udom Emmanuel, governor of Akwa Ibom when the incident occurred.

The lawyer was sentenced without due process on July 27, 2022, after questioning the judge for allowing armed security agents with AK-47 rifles into the courtroom.

SaharaReporters on Wednesday reported that the lawyer was secretly transferred from the Ikot Ekpene Medium Security Custodial Center to the Uyo Custodial Centre.

The newspaper also learnt on Thursday that his beard was forcibly shaved off by prison officials

“Staff of the Nigerian Prison Service at the Uyo Medium Security Custodial Centre have forcibly shaved Inibehe Effiong’s beard. We were denied access to see but someone who saw him confirmed this,” a source told SaharaReporters earlier on Thursday.

Falana, in a statement on Thursday, said, “On July 27, 2022, the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Ekaette Obot convicted and sentenced Inibehe Effiong to one-month imprisonment for contempt of court in facie curiae.

“In order to prevent Inibehe from appealing against the conviction and sentence imposed on him the Chief Judge has refused to furnish him with a certified true copy of her judgment in contravention of section 36(7) of the Constitution which prescribes that every convict is entitled to a copy of the judgment of the court that tried and convicted him.

“However, the warrant signed by the Judge directed that Effiong be held in Ikot Ekpene Correctional Centre, Akwa Ibom throughout the duration of his prison term. But the order of the Court was secretly varied today as Inibehe was forcefully transferred to Uyo Correctional Centre in handcuffs even though there was no violence on his part.

“At the Uyo Correctional Centre, Inibehe was forced to sit on bare floor while his head was shaved together with his beard. He was thereafter subjected to more horrendous humiliation and paraded before all prison inmates.

“The brutal torture meted out to Inibehe by the prison officials in Akwa Ibom State constitutes a violent violation of his fundamental right to dignity guaranteed by section 34 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 and Article 5 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act Cap A9 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

“It is painful to note that the unprovoked violence unleashed on Inibehe is a sad reminder of the case of Minere Amakiri, then a reporter with Nigerian Observer, the old Bendel State-owned newspapers whose head was shaved with a broken bottle in 1973 on the orders of Alfred Diette-Spiff, the then Military Governor of the State.

“Apart from challenging the egregious infringement of the fundamental right of Inibehe to the dignity of his person and fair hearing we shall press for the prosecution of the officials who inflicted torture on him contrary to the provision of section 2 of the Anti-Torture Act of 2017. The penalty for the offence of inflicting torture on any person in Nigeria is 25 years imprisonment without any option of fine.”

Tinubu’s Nursery Ryhmes On International Youth Day: Daring The Public Venom, Written By Kunle Wizeman Ajayi

Those who wrote Bola Tinubu’s “Naija Youths No Dey Carry Last” speech at the International Youth Day are of retarded thinking, smartless and insensitive. They fumbled by not addressing the general plights and challenges that bereaves the youths. They wrote some kind of nursery rhymes thinking it’s sonorous poetry.

They don’t care about ASUU strike, neither do they care about the problems of unemployment, issues like police brutality and such other burning collective ïnterests. Instead, they go back to the Abacha style of praising just about ten of over 100 million youths who are successful in their endeavours like Tobi Amusa; Ese Brume; and others. These are very few youths who on their own strived to find light at the end of the dark tunnel of bad and irresponsible governance that we all pass through. Same Tinubu, who has eroded all the old Game Centres built all around the communities in Lagos by the Jakande UPN government of 1979-83, now pipers the boring praises of world class athletes. They sow the wind, and want to reap cassava. No be juju be that?!

Tinubu’s hegemony and their puppet governor s have done all they could to kill real sports in Lagos since 1999. A good instance is the popular Ile-Pako Mini-stadium at Agege which is one of the very last of community games centres in the Local Government, is being forcefully taken out now by government agents. What this means is that most of those who train for different sports at the mini-stadium are being jeopardized. I am also aware that there are attempts to sell off Evans Square at Ebutte Meta too. Lagos State government till date does not have any soccer team in the Nigerian Premier league!

Meanwhile, the cause of why most of the youths are living from hand to mouth and are in pains and anguish are the rogue policies of privatisation; deregulation; Public Private Partnership (PPP) that are wickedly implemented forcefully as part of implementing the neo-liberal economic policies of World Bank, which means simply says: take the developments away from the millions, and give all the wealth to a few billionaires in politics and business.

But those who the gods would kill, they make deaf, blind, and insane. How could a purveyor of #LekkiMassacre ever address youths without showing remorse? There was not even a modest appreciation of the youth angst and general vexations over the very high cost but so lowered standard of living. That arrogance would show it’s consequences even before the polls!

Many of youths are angry today about the way the EndSARS was forcibly halted by the government agents. Let’s understand that we were actually fighting to end the government at all levels. And they saw same as that, no matter our slogans. The military and police is why our oppressors have the effontery to keep oppressing us; they protect their interests of institutional oppressions. So, when you asked to EndSARS, it’s like asking Politicians to end thuggery!

It is sure that they drowned the #EndSARS in blood so consciously! We must rise to smash their system of greed and power by standing up for total liberation and revolutionary alternatives like Omoyele Sowore, who is the only anti-establishment candidate in the #2023Elections!

Terrorists Have Taken Over Kaduna, Banned Political Activities Towards 2023 General Elections – Governor El-Refai Writes Buhari

Governor Nasir El-Rufai says terrorists are consolidating their grip on communities in the state with a parallel government and permanent operational base in the North-western state.

According to PREMIUM TIMES, Rufai disclosed this in a late July memo sent to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The terrorists belonging to Ansaru al-Musulmina fi Bilad al-Sudan, are believed to have moved to Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State in 2012 when they broke away from Boko Haram.

The terrorists that formed Ansaru were said to be responsible for some of the high-profile attacks claimed by Boko Haram before the split.

In El-Rufai’s late July memo obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, he lay bare how the terrorists had infiltrated and dominated communities and formed “a parallel governing authority,” exercising control over social and economic activities and dispensation of justice in the area.

He said the terrorists had advanced in their plans to make Kaduna forest areas their “permanent operational base” for the North-west region, citing a “series of intelligence reports.”

“Observed movement patterns and intercepted communications of migrating terrorists have shown a clear interest in setting up a base, with the stretches of forest area between Kaduna and Niger states strongly considered,” he wrote.

As the political activities towards the 2023 general elections pick up steam, the terrorists, El-Rufai told Buhari, have promulgated a law to ban residents from participating.

“The insurgents enacted a law in the district, banning all forms of political activity or campaign ahead of the 2023 elections, especially in Madobiya and Kazage villages,” the governor wrote.

The Ansaru terrorists are known to have an extremist ideological posture against democracy and secular authorities.

The ban on political activities, the governor said, followed a recent wedding ceremony involving the terrorists.

“According to actionable intelligence, members of the Jama’atu Ansarul Musulmina Fi’biladis Sudan (aka Ansaru) hibernating in Kuyello district of Birnin Gwari LGA recently conducted a nuptial ceremony during which they married two yet-to-be-identified female residents of Kuyello village,” El-Rufai wrote.

“The ceremony was attended by various Ansaru members and witnessed by residents of the area. After the marital rites, insurgents in attendance reportedly conveyed the brides to the dreaded Kuduru forest, in the same district.”

Sunday Igboho Issues Eviction Notice To Terrorists In South-West Nigeria, Says No Going Back On Yoruba Nation

Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho has issued a warning to Fulani terrorists in the six South-West states of Nigeria to leave before it is too late.

Mr Igboho issued the fresh notice in a statement issued on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Oluyomi Koiki, titled ‘You Cannot Take Over Yoruba Land Just As The Northern Part Of Nigeria Has Been Taken Over By Fulani Terrorists.’

He alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari has done nothing to stop killings by Fulani herdsmen.

Igboho said the activities of Fulani militias lately have made Yoruba people to regret being hospitable and generous.

He asserted that Yoruba people would break away from Nigeria and reclaim their sovereignty as they were before the British colonialism, stressing that it is their God-given right.

According to him, there is no going back on their quest for the self-determination of Yoruba Nation.

The statement reads in part; “I, Chief Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho. I am a Yoruba Nation self determination activist. And Yoruba Nation must stand. No going back.

“President Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday that we Yoruba people are friends with the Hausa people. This is true, we are friends with Hausa; Igbo; Kanuri and all other ethnic groups.

“But we retain and maintain our Indegenous nationality that we were created by Almighty God. We have “Omoluabi” in our nature.

“This is why we have shown great hospitality to anyone that comes as a stranger to our Yoruba Land.

“The activities of the Fulani (Both Nigerian Fulani and most especially the foreign Fulani according to Federal Government of Nigeria) lately, had made us wanting to regret both our hospitality and generousity.

“The British that amalgamated Northern and Southern Nigeria together, knew we are not the same.

“We Yoruba are not fools, we know that Nigerian resources come mostly from Southern Nigeria. Yet the Southern Nigeria that are used and still being used to develop the Northern Nigeria are now being extended to their brothers in Niger Republic. Yet, the foreign terrorists from Niger Republic and the environs are sorrounding our forests, kidnapping; killing and wreaking havoc on Yoruba People.

“We know what the Fulani did to you Hausas.

“All the Emirs in the North are Fulani and all the Governors are Fulani as well. We know vividly how they systematically subdued and conquered the Hausas in their land. But let them know now, we are Yoruba. “Ije ti a je tete enikan o gbodo je dagunro”, no it is impossible and Fulani would soon realise that.

“This is why Yoruba Nation is no going back.

“We know we were not the same in regards to culture; history; beliefs and values and even our georgraphy. So must we rule over one another. Let everyone manage their own territory as created by God. Not the British creation Called Nigeria.

“The killings; maimings; loss of income and damage to Yoruba people’s landed properties. Enough is Enough. We know these killings are nothing to the Fulani but it means a lot to we Yoruba people. And that is why President Muhammadu Buhari had kept quiet on the Fulani killings. The President has done absolutely nothing to stop these killings.

“We know President Muhammadu Buhari is the Patron of all the Fulani worldwide. But Yoruba Land can never be conquered by Fulani.

“President Muhammadu Buhari was reminding Nnamdi Kanu and the Igbos of the massacre they carried out during the Biafra War. The President should know that this can never be repeated again in any of our Land.

“We have all woken up to Fulani Agenda.

“The Middle Belt people are also being killed. Everyone knows who is behind all these atrocities and President Muhammadu Buhari is their Life Patron.

“So, we Yoruba are pulling out and reclaiming our Sovereignty as we were before the British Colonialism.

“It is our God given right. And there is no going back on our quest for Yoruba Nation self determination.”

“I want to issue warning to all the terrorist Fulani (Home and foreign Fulani) in Yoruba forests to leave now before it is too late.

“When the ‘Alale Yoruba’ fully begins, most of you would not live to tell the story,” the statement added.

Another Nollywood actor has been a victim of the country’s increasing insecurity, which has reached such alarming levels that even our mansions and top stars are no longer safe.

Actor Saka in Nollywood claims that on Monday night, armed men broke into his home in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Saka is a veteran Nollywood actor.

This information was revealed in a statement provided to newsmen by a friend of the veteran Kayode Soaga.

According to Soaga, the armed men broke into Saka’s home and threatened to kill him unless they received N20 million.

The men broke into his home at around two in the morning, fully armed with pump action rifles and matchetes, and they dispersed his guards.

More terrible robberies took place in three more homes on the same block. They destroyed the burglary proof and immediately approached him, threatening to kill him unless he paid N20 million. The star said he didn’t have even though he begged and pleaded for N3m.

In addition to torturing the actor, they also confiscated all of his laptops, iPhones, Android phones, and any cash that was in the house as well as his ATM cards.
