Court sentences ‘Yahoo boy’ to 235yrs imprisonment over N525m internet fraud

A Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state has convicted and sentenced a not@rious international fraudster, Scales Olatunji, to 235 years imprisonment for internet fraud and money laundering.

Olatunji was arrested by operatives of the EFCC on March 20, 2019 and arraigned on July 2, 2019 on 45-count charges bordering on identity theft, money laundering and conspiracy.

Between January 2017 to October 2018, the convict conspired with four others (at large) to fraudulently acquire the total sum of N525,172,580 through Business E-mail Compromise and Identity Theft, the court heard.

On May 15, 2018, he sent an email to one Monica Goulmoen of the Charity Association for providing girls and boys in Kobane with a football pitch, while impersonating a certain Per Ravn Omdal, a former Norwegian Football Association President, demanding the sum of €64,000 to be transferred to him.

He, however, pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, thus setting the stage for his trial.

Delivering judgment on Monday, June 27, 2022, Justice Agatha Okeke convicted Olatunji on all the 45-counts preferred against him by the EFCC.

Justice Okeke said that, “The evidence of the prosecution witnesses are consistent and the prosecution established the guilt of the defendant in the case of money laundering as it relates to count one to five of the charges.

The prosecution also established the guilt of the defendant in the offence of cybercrime as it relates to count six to 45 of the charges. The prosecution, on the totality of evidence before this court, proved the charges against the defendant.”

The judge sentenced Olatunji to seven years imprisonment on counts one to five, and five years imprisonment on counts six to 45. The sentence, shall, however, run concurrently with effect from the date of arrest.

The court also ordered that the money in the convict’s account be forfeited to Norwegian citizens through the EFCC. Also, two of his houses in Lagos State are to be sold by the EFCC and the proceeds restituted to the Norwegian victims.

No Individual Can Fix Nigeria’s Problem, Breakup the Only Solution – Okonjo-Iweala’s Son

Beasts of No Nation writer, Uzodinma Iweala, has stated that Nigeria needs another independence and should be dissolved.

Uzodinma made the declaration in his article,’Nigeria’s Second Independence: Why the Giant of Africa Needs to Start Over’, published in Foreign Affairs.

The American magazine of international relations and United States foreign policy is published by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).

Uzodinma’s call comes as Africa’s most populous nation prepares for the general elections scheduled for February and March 2023.

The author insists that one of the solutions to the political troubles of the country is its dissolution.

As citizens face serious security and economic problems, he urged them to decide if they want Nigeria’s existence as a state to continue or to expire.

Nigeria’s political system defies neat packaging”, stressed the son of ex-Finance Minister and WTO DG Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

“Scholars have labeled it everything from the facetious “chaosocracy” to the more benign “entrepreneurial democracy” to the pejorative “kleptocracy.”

Uzodinma said such tags wrongly suggest that Nigeria’s problems stem from individual moral failings within the political class.

Citing experts’ recommendation of good leadership and good governance, the Harvard graduate believes no individual, however well intentioned, can fix the challenges.

Nothing should be off-limits for discussion – even the dissolution of the country”, he suggested.

“Before doing anything else, Nigerians need to decide: Do they want the patchwork entity named Nigeria to remain Nigeria?

“It is a reasonable question, given that the country is the arbitrary product of colonial boundaries.”

Uzodinma said in their quest to form a working system, citizens should not “limit their thinking to outdated and flawed U.S. and European models of democracy”.

The novelist won the Hoopes Prize and Dorothy Hicks Lee Prize for Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis while in Harvard, among other honours.

Policeman Stabbed Woman In Osun State Over N100

Some officers attached to the Osun State Police Command have stabbed a woman (name withheld) in Apomu town for asking them to pay fully for the meat bought from her.

Witnesses told newsmen that the policemen from Area Command, Ikire Zone on Tuesday evening bought three pieces of fried meat which cost N200 each but paid N500 which was rejected by the woman’s son.

The rejection was said to have angered the officers who harassed the young boy.

One of the policemen identified as Samson Kudaisi also injured the woman with knife immediately she came out to query them for not wanting to pay the required amount for the meat.

An eyewitness said, “These police officers came here, so the woman’s son sold three pieces of meat to them, they gave him N500 instead of N600 for three pieces of meat. The boy asked them for the N100 change and they refused.

“The boy asked them to balance the money; they told him he was mad, that they were police officers and shouldn’t have paid at all. So the boy went inside to meet his father and mother that the officers did not want to pay; as the woman came out, the officers started beating the small boy that he went to call his parents.

“Before we know what was happening, one of them brought out a tear gas and released it on the woman. People gathered there to ask what happened, during that process, one of them brought out a knife and used it on the woman who just had an operation.”

Group Mobilises University Students For Mass Protest To End ASUU Strike

A civil society, Save Public Education Campaign, has called on the striking university lecturers, students and parents across the country, to get ready for  mass actions to compel the Nigerian government to take necessary steps to end the strike action of the university lecturers.

The group also called for immediate payment of all withheld salaries of the striking academic lecturers and unions across the country.

Addressing a press conference on Monday in Abuja on behalf of the group the Co-conveners, Comrade Vivian Bello and Comrade Dimeji Macaulay, the group berated the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government for wasting humongous amounts of money and resources on political parties’ Nomination forms and Primaries.
It scolded the government for taking politics as priority while relegating the issues of education and future of Nigerian children to the background.

Bello described the action of government toward the plight of the lecturers which bordered on issues of poor welfare as ridiculous, absurd and unacceptable.

She lamented the time lost by the students in public universities across the country which she said amounted to an entire two and half years under the Buhari government.

Vivian said, “Distressing statistics show that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has been on strike for a total of over 725 days, since the beginning of this administration over issues that bother largely on poor welfare, University Autonomy and lack of adequate funding for Universities. When tallied inversely, this amounts to an entire two and half years lost, in the educational lives of innocent Nigerian children/students in public universities across the country.
“It did not end there; the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education, ASUP and COEASU are all also currently on strike on similar issues as ASUU. We all can see clearly, that this is an all-round collapse of the tertiary education sector in the country.

“We make bold to say, that if government will recognise the futility in its so-called insecurity-fighting campaign, change strategy and invest a greater proportion of the resources it is expending in the insecurity campaign in providing robust, efficient and quality educational system and structure and qualitatively educate its teeming citizenry, within a calculated period of time, insecurity will gradually die a natural  death in Nigeria and the society will take on its hitherto regular and peaceful equilibrium.
“In order words, we submit boldly that education can be a veritable panacea to insecurity in Nigeria. In view of the gravity of the situation, we make a clarion call for unity and coming together of staff unions, students, workers and communities across the country, to mobilise and get ready for civic mass actions to compel the government to take the necessary steps to end the strike and have the millions of our children and students, return to school to end the jeopardy of their education and future.”

On his own part, Macaulay faulted the unpopular policies of Buhari’s led government
in education sector which he said had affected public universities and tertiary institutions across the country.

He called on government to discontinue with the Integrated Payment Platform and Information System (IPPIS) platform adding that evidence by the striking academic unions showed that the platform was problematic, inconsistent and fraudulent.
He therefore called for the deployment of the proposed University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as suggested by the lecturers.

“On the other hand, the children of ruling elites are graduating in different international universities across developed countries around the world. Soon, if the situation persists, we will have no option than to compile names of these public officials and their children, and demand the hosting countries and schools expel them to return and have education as it is, in their home country, Nigeria,” Macaulay said.

Human Trafficking: 46 Migrants Found Dead Inside Truck In US, 16 Others Rushed To Hospital

No fewer than 46 persons have been confirmed dead after they were discovered in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer in San Antonio on Monday, in what seems to be a human smuggling incident.

Washington Post reports that another 16 persons were rescued alive but have been taken to the hospital for treatment according to the San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood.

The victims had reportedly suffered from extreme heat and dehydration. According to Hood, the bodies removed from the truck “were hot to the touch.”

“There were no signs of water in the vehicle, and no visible working AC unit on that rig,” he said.
The nationality of the victims was however not disclosed and three people have been taken into police custody, authorities said.
Authorities noted that the investigations will be handled by Homeland Security Investigations, a branch of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that specializes in human trafficking cases.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said, “This is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy,” as he described the migrants as people “who had families, who were likely trying to find a better life.”

The incident comes amid a record influx of migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border, where authorities are on pace to record more than 2 million arrests during fiscal 2022.
Smuggling organisations working inside the United States sometimes pack migrants into trucks and cargo trailers after they have already crossed the border, to sneak them past highway checkpoints operated by the U.S. Border Patrol.

In recent years, there have been several deadly human trafficking incidents on U.S. soil — but the death toll in Monday’s tragedy surpassed those events.

The location is close to Interstate 35, a major transit route for traffic and commerce from the border. Police said the truck full of people was discovered around 6pm local time.

Texas Republican Governor, Greg Abbott blamed the incident on the president as he tweeted, “these deaths are on Biden” saying it was a “result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law.”

Protest On Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway As Police Shot Two Commuters Dead

Some yet-to-be-identified men of the Nigeria Police Force, Ogun State command, have reportedly killed two commuters, a truck driver and his motor boy, along the Itori axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

Daily Post gathered that the policemen in their patrol van on Monday met the victims driving against traffic to avoid the bad portion of the road in Ewekoro Local Government, the same offence the cops were also said to be guilty of.

A source said, “When they saw the truck driver, they told him to turn back. The driver was trying to be reluctant and they shot his tyres.”
“This led to an altercation and at the end of the day, the policemen shot dead the truck driver and his motor boy. That was why the youths of Itori blocked the road to protest the unjust killing of the driver and his colleague,” an eyewitness said.

The incident led to disruption of all commercial activities in the area.
For hours, commuters were held in traffic without any end in sight to the traffic jam, which started building up around 4pm.

Many motorists, therefore, used bushy alternative routes, where they were compelled to “settle” area boys before they could progress in their journey.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed there was an incident in Itori but he said he was yet to be fully briefed about the incident by the Divisional Police Officer in Itori.

You can’t fix Nigeria – Ango Abdullahi attacks Tinubu, Atiku

The convener of the Northern Elders Forum, NEF, has said Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, can’t fix Nigeria.

Abdullahi said Tinubu and Atiku have been within the political circle for about 30 years, but he is not convinced with their achievements and what they have to offer in 2023.

The elder statesman, however, stressed that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo could have been a better presidential material.

According to Abdullahi: “We still haven’t got the man who we think will fix Nigeria. What we have on the ground is not good enough. How can you look at Tinubu and Atiku to say they are the ones who will fix this country?

“They have been on the ground for the last 25, 30 years and so on. What have they done? What are we looking for?”

“I believe we have not had a good array of politicians. With due respect to some of them that one saw contesting, I am not being selfish here by referring to certain people like Prof. Osinbajo. He is a quality material but the political system will not tolerate him,” he told Vanguard.

ASUU proffers solution to ongoing strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has observed that resolving its ongoing strike action could be done by the adoption of the transparent payment platform, University Transparency and Accountability Solutions (UTAS).

Dr Socrates Ebo, Chairperson of ASUU, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State chapter, in a statement, lamented that the deep-rooted penchant for corruption within government ethos is all out to frustrate its deployment, saying that UTAS has been proven to be a flawless payment platform.

According to him, the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), has been decisively proven to be a porous, easily compromised payment platform.

The chairperson opined that the IPPIS has been ineffective in curtailing waste of resources, stressing that on the contrary it has been used to pad payrolls and used to effect all manner of fraudulent deductions from workers’ salaries.

He explained, “We definitely can’t continue this way, the adoption of a transparent payment platform is critical to resolving the current impasse in the nation’s university system. UTAS has been proven to be a flawless payment platform but the deep-rooted penchant for corruption in our government ethos is all out to frustrate its deployment.”

He stated that no lecturer under IPPIS can say for certain what his salary is, pointing out that what they find queer is the insistence of some government officials on the use of IPPIS when it is proven to be compromised and corruption-prone.

The statement noted that UTAS has been designed to be corruption-proof, asking why the government would not be interested in a payment platform that is cheap, 100% corruption-proof, and 100% indigenous.

It stated that if IPPIS was corruption-proof, the accountant-general of the federation would not have been able to loot N80 billion and N70 billion.

It said the statement claimed of savings by IPPIS are fraudulent, saying that IPPIS arbitrarily cuts workers’ legitimate salaries to cover its heavily corrupt and inefficient tracks to create the false impression of efficiency and savings.

The statement explained that the recently paid minimum wage arrears are a case study as many persons have not been paid till date, stressing that in his branch alone, 40 persons have not been paid while the Minister of Labour thinks that they were paid three years arrears.

He added that what they received was a mere nine months without any clear template on how the payments were made, stressing that nobody knows what they are entitled to, nobody can ask questions to anybody and even the university bursars can’t explain how the payments were made and what was paid.

He suggested that the government should get serious with education in the country, saying that in the 60s and 70s, the universities ranked high among their peers with scholars all over the world coming to their universities to teach and study.

He lamented that today, the universities are so dead that even their politicians no longer believe in them as they now send their wards abroad for the same education, saying that they are the people killing education in the country as ASUU is the only bastion of defence for quality education in this country.

The chairperson noted that when education is destroyed, healthcare is also destroyed, and doctors are taught new procedures and skills at the universities, not at Aso Rock Clinic or National Assembly, pointing out that eventually, everyone gets sick and everyone eventually suffers consequences of the dearth of educational infrastructure.

Mourinho Pleas To FIFA, Ask The Body To Stop African Players From Representing Other Countries

Jose Mourinho has made a plea to FIFA to stop African players from representing other countries other than that of their origin. The Special One believes once this is done, African countries would start winning the World Cup.

“I want the world to see that Africa is equal with everyone, Africa are not behind with talent. They have talents to win any tournament, except that most of their best players are scattered around the world playing for other countries instead of their homelands”.

” I know I won’t be popular for making this statement, but #FIFA should make things fair by refusing to let players to represent other countries, this will make FIFA tournaments even more competitive not one sided.”

Political Party To Drag Tinubu To Court Over Alleged False Academic Qualifications, His 2007 Data Contradict 2022

The Action Peoples Party has moved to challenge the academic qualifications of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, before a court of law.

This comes on the trail of alleged irregularities in the academic qualifications and documents submitted by Tinubu to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The APP’s chairman, Uche Nnadi, said the party had enough facts to prove its case noting that the publication of the list of candidates for the 2023 elections showed that the APC presidential candidate was not eligible to contest in the forthcoming elections as his forms allegedly contain false information.

“Tinubu denies attending primary and secondary but claims a university degree in the new forms INEC published today (Friday),” Leadership quoted him as saying.

He added, “Tinubu commits perjury as he abandons his earlier claim of attending primary school, sworn in an affidavit to run for governor but now claims not to have attended primary school.

“Tinubu’s new forms contradict his 2007 affidavit that he had primary school and secondary.

“Tinubu’s new declaration in new INEC forms of not attending primary and secondary school is false information, in view of earlier nomination forms of 2007 on oath containing alleged controversial primary and secondary schools he claimed to have.”

A police inspector identified as Jubril was killed during the attack, according to a report by People’s Gazette.

The terrorists reportedly stormed the police post at about 2:15am, shooting sporadically before detonating the bomb.

A resident in the area, Abubakar Momoh, said, “The gunmen spent more than two hours inside the station operating freely without any interference from the security agencies.”

He added that the bullets from the sporadic gunshots shattered the windows of a mosque and a Catholic Church near the police station, during the attack.
